Get a website
Why this is important?
A website has multiple uses and benefits, directly impacting your sales. A few include:
- You get found on Google.
- It lets you build e-mail lists
- You can make direct sales, eliminating commissions
Your online business may be on Instagram, Facebook, or even just Whatsapp. However, the one online asset you M-U-S-T have, is a website.
Did you know that 97% of people try to learn more about a company online before they even initiate contact?
That’s another reason why I’m mentioning it first. Everything else you learn on this page may fail if you don’t have a website. People will see your marketing campaigns, search for your website online, not find it, and quit!
How to get a website?
It’s not that hard. You can build a website yourself, with 0 previous skills or experience, within minutes.
Here’s a brief, 3-step overview of how to get your website:
- A domain: This is your URL. E.g. www.updateland.com These cost less than $10.00/YEAR. I’d recommend going with a .com domain. Keep it short. You can use Namecheap to get a domain.
- A hosting server: This is where you will upload your files or install your CMS. You can pick a host from one of these 10+ best hosting servers for small businesses.
- Install WordPress or upload direct HTML files for your website.
If you’re completely new, get a domain from Namecheap and then follow this step-by-step guide to set your website up in the next 10 minutes.
Once you have a website, make sure you mention it everywhere. On your business cards, online graphic creatives, e-mails and everywhere else.
Work on your website’s SEO
Why this is important?
- Your website will only get traffic if it has proper SEO.
- A website that ranks higher brings in more traffic= more sales.
Maybe you already have a website? It probably isn’t working as well as it should’ve, eh?
That’s because in order to get your business noticed, just having a website isn’t enough. You must work on “Search Engine Optimization”.
It’s a process that makes sure your keywords/products appear before your competitors when a user searches for them.
E.g. let’s say you’ve got a solar panel business. If I search for “Solar Panels” on Google, I’ll see thousands of websites, but not yours. Proper SEO just ensures you appear on top, preferably at the #1 spot for whatever keyword you choose.
How to get your SEO done?
SEO involves dozens of factors and continuous work. You can either learn and do it yourself, or hire a SEO specialist. SEO is one of the best ways to drive sales in the long term for free.
Some of the core SEO optimizations include:
- Keyword research (So you know which keywords you should target).
- Link building (So you rank better).
- Competition analysis (So you can monitor and outrank keywords from your competitors).
- On-page SEO optimization (This keeps your overall page properly optimized).
Tools like Semrush make the entire process extremely easy and streamlined. You can also use Ahrefs to get your SEO done.
Optimize your website for mobile
Let’s say you already own a website, it’s not of much use without mobile optimization.
Did you know that as of 2023, mobile searches account for over 60.06% of total searches? Additionally, they’re in an uptrend. Desktop searcheson the other hand only account for about 37.08%, and are in a downtrend!
So, even if you do have a website, if the user doesn’t see it right, you lose them right away. It may look like a scam, unprofessional or just not interesting enough.
In fact, mobile-friendliness helps you get noticed directly as well. A mobile-friendly website has higher chances of ranking better on search engines than a non-friendly website.
Why this is important?
- Billions of potential customers.
- Customers get to connect with you, makes them feel important.
- Easier exposure as compared to search engine ads.
- Builds overall trust
Over 55% of users learn about a new company on social media. Why let your competitors introduce themselves first, eh?
Now, there are multiple ways to leverage this. Your first step is to get noticed, to get those first few likes/followers in.
Influencer Marketing is trending these days. From having $1.7B in market size just 6 years back, to being over $16 billion today, Influencer marketing is in a massive uptrend.
Influencers basically are social media pages/individuals with a sizeable follower count. Now, these have massive reach, but are cheaper than traditional celebrities.
You can design a graphic creative promoting your brand, and they’ll post it on their pages for you.
These social media platforms often have multiple exposure streams. E.g. on Instagram you’ve got stories, highlights, reels and the normal feed. This lets you capture your audience the way you like it, using the media type you like.
How to get this done?
You can use tools like Upfluence or Hypeauditor to find real influencers (not with fake followers/bots) and connect to them easily.
Obviously, you’ve also got to manage your own pages. Post frequently about your products, what makes you special, even let users directly order from you.
Aggressive competition hunting
I’ll be honest, this isn’t for everyone.
If you’d rather not offend a competitor, you may wish to refrain from using this method. This would require a lot of manual efforts but also has better conversion chances.
The chances are more simply because:
- You get direct access to your competitor’s established consumer base.
- These users are 100% potential customers.
- In most cases, they’re already looking for an alternative to your competitor.
- Your approach builds instant trust.
You basically have to go to your competitors’ social media handles, and check their comments. You can also do this when you see a competitor’s ads.
How to get this done?
Very often, you’d find unhappy/unsatisfied customers complaining about the company or the product.
All you have to do is, pitch yourself as an “alternative”. Just say –“Hey Mr. X, sorry for the inconvenience you’ve faced. We’re a different brand, offering the exact same thing, but better. Here’s a 5% discount code if you’d like to give us a try. You can also DM us here for a more personalized experience”.
The user is already a person who has spent money. Your discount coupon may incentivize them to try you out. Even if they don’t, they now know you exist.
Sponsor events
Why this is important?
- You get access to a third-party’s established consumer/fan base.
- Helps establish trust.
You’re trying to get noticed, that means you need more eyeballs, don’t you?
One of the best ways to get those is to sponsor events. Find events in your niche either online, or offline. Even a broad niche would work.
E.g. if you’re a game development company, you can sponsor game tournaments. If you’re in the food business, sponsoring food challenges, or cooking competitions is a good idea.
If you can’t find an event, create one yourself. This will give you even more buzz even though it may cost you a bit more.
It gives you more exposure as you aren’t just a “sponsor”, you’re also the organizer. So, instead of just getting a badge on the promotional material, you get to control how much space and exactly how your brand is shown.
It costs more because third-party events will also have other sponsors, bringing your share of cost down.
You can even sponsor events outside your niche, just for the eyeballs. In fact, the contrast may just work out in your favour as long as the target audience is the same for the event you’re sponsoring.
E.g. you can sponsor a cooking show on Youtube, TikTok, Instagram even though you’re a shoe company. Because hey, everyone wears shoes, even those who cook, right?
How to get this done?
Just approach a page/individual, and let them know you’re willing to sponsor an event/webinar/challenge/workshop on their page.
You can also approach existing events and ask to be added as a sponsor. Use social media to join groups related to your niche/product. Then, you can just post a question, “Does anyone know of any event related to [Your niche]”.
Organize Workshops
Why this is important?
- You seem like an “expert” in your niche.
- You can build an e-mail list.
With everything being digital these days, organizing workshops only requires a computer. No halls, seating or food arrangements required, right?
You can always host educational/fun workshops in your niche, regardless of what niche you’re in.
Also, do not forget the e-mail list. I hope you’ve got a website by this point. If you haven’t, you still can use Google Forms or other similar alternatives to collect user data.
When a user registers, you get his/her name, e-mail and other details you can use later.
Use giveaways & chained rewards
Why this is important?
Those are a good few reasons why you should run giveaways, aren’t they? Give users a reward simply for following you, clicking on a certain offer or anything else you want. These work well because you only have to give away one, or just a few rewards in any case. In return, you get hundreds of participants who join your giveaway and now know about you.
There is a level-2 for these giveaways, that works much better than simple giveaways- Chain rewards or referral rewards.
“Chain rewards” are rewards users only get after sharing the information with other users.
E.g. once someone signs up for your giveaway, they must share the giveaway on their social media channels.
You’ll definitely get more eyeballs and direct user engagement, wouldn’t you? The chain continues to grow and at the end pays for itself!
How to get this done?
You use can something like Invitereferrals. It tracks legit referrals and lets you offer rewards for shares, registration, subscription, sales and so much more.
Run Ads
Why this is important?
- The most “targeted” audience.
- For every $1 spent on Google, small businesses make about $8.00.
- Social media ads are equally important. Massive exposure and direct sales potential.
You can run ads for any platform. Either social media, or search engines. With ads, you can target “exactly” who you want.
You can choose the age, location, preferences, even devices and so much more.
This gives you a crowd that’s pre-interested in whatever you’re offering. Obviously, this is the most expensive way to get your business noticed. However, it also is one of the most effective in 2024.
How to get this done?
- Sign up at Google Ads if you wish to run a Google ad campaign.
- Use Facebook to run Faceook or Instagram ad campaigns.
If you combine this right with the chained giveaways, you literally get infinite exposure.
Partner up
This is a bit harder but is more effective in getting your brand noticed.
So, let’s say you’re a new player without an audience or fan base. However, I’m sure you’ve got other companies/individuals offering the same products/services?
You can reach out to them, and offer to host a collective webinar, educational workshop, or even giveaway. You can do a 50:50 split on the investments, or you may have to bear it all alone.
Now, it’s hard to get one of these bigger (than you) brands to accept your offer. However, you’ll eventually get a yes here and there.
Once you do, you’re basically getting access to the brands’ pre-established audience-base and previous customers.
Be sure not to promote yourself heavily on these. Keep it neutral and just get your name out there.
Affiliate Marketing
If you’re trying to learn how to get your online business noticed, this is one of the most traditional answers.
Affiliate Marketing is just a business model where you offer a share of your profits to a third-party. The third-party is responsible for bringing in new customers.
You can either offer direct money, discount codes or other benefits.
E.g. for every new customer one of your current customers bring in, they may get $X or a discount coupon for their next purchase.
The discount coupon benefits you more, but isn’t applicable for all niches. Also, everyone loves money more than discount codes.
Sponsored Reviews
These are a great way to generate some word-of-mouth publicity and is similar to influencer marketing. You find pages/groups/websites that get enough engagement/traffic.
You then pay them to publish a review of your product. This exposes you to the audience/fans of the page/website. If your product is good, the review will be good as well and this may bring in quite a few sales.
Do note that you can demand “only a positive” review. Although, I’d recommend against it. I do not accept such demands here at Updateland and only publish what’s my honest opinion/experience.
How to get this done?
- On social media, use #hashtags. E.g. #travelblogger #cakelover and so on. You’ll get relevant profiles and then filter them based on their popularity.
- For websites, you can use Semrush. Just enter your keyword (product) on its Keyword tool and it’ll show you the top websites for your product.
What to do after your business is noticed?
So, you sure can get those first few eyeballs using the tricks mentioned above.
However, how do you keep those eyeballs returning? How do you turn them into a customer?
Here are a few tips you can use.
- Build an e-mail list: Whenever you run those giveaways/contests/workshops, make sure you get a participants’ e-mail. You can approach them with offers, or just information about new products.
- Discounts: A few discount coupons go a long way. Offer these to previous customers for their loyalty, or new customers as an incentive.
A step-by-step guide to get noticed (and make sales) online in 2024
I’ve shared a few options here, haven’t I?
However, how about I line them up? Give you a nice little sequence which should make things easier for you?
Here we go:
Step 1: Create a website
Step 2: Create social channels (Instagram/Facebook and Twitter at least)
Step 3: Design a chain giveaway banner. It should contain the following:
- The reward
- Your website & social media usernames
- Clear instructions asking participants to share it on their social channels.
- A registration link.
Step 4: Create the registration page. You can use your website/ a lead generation software/ or Google forms if you need a free alternative. Make sure you ask for the user’s e-mail on these forms. Optionally, you can also ask for their social media handles.
Step 5: Promote the giveaway using your own social media pages, influencer marketing and ads.
Step 6: Use the captured e-mails/social media handles to send them discount coupons a few days after your giveaway is over. This reminds them of you, and the coupon may incentive a purchase.
Final words: how to get your online business noticed?
