Google has now married AI. Well, technically anyway. The latest update, M121 brings a few updates almost entirely based on AI.
Summary:
- 3 new Chrome AI updates
- Tab Organizer: Organizes similar tabs together
- Theme generator: Generate custom theme based on text prompts.
- Writing assistant (scheduled): Helps with writing text.
- Fixed security vulnerabilities
The first update is its “Tab Organizer”. Any human (with any sense of discipline of course) generally organizes their related/similar tabs together. With the new update, you aren’t required to do this manually. Chrome recognizes the similar tabs and lets you group them in a click. It makes things fun by suggesting names and emojis for the group.
The second update is my personal favorite. It’s a “theme generator”. I simply enter a text, e.g. “Chill vibe, Cherry Blossom, Japan” and it’ll generate a theme for me. This theme is unique to me and takes a few seconds. It can be enabled from Customize Chrome> Change theme > Create with AI.
Then there’s a “Writing Assistant” that isn’t live yet but is scheduled for the next update. Whenever you’re typing anything, in any tab, you can use the AI to improve your writing. You simply have to start writing and let AI finish the rest.
To use or enable these updates, simply go to “Settings> Experimental AI”.
The update also fixed 17 security issues! Unfortunately, this update is currently restricted to U.S regions only. If you’re in the States, simply update your Chrome (Settings > About Chrome > Update).
Although, if you don’t see it on your system already you may have to wait a few days, or weeks for it to arrive.
Now, as compared to Microsoft (Edge), this is still a pretty lazy move. I say that because Google Chrome has a 68% market share, while Edge has a very low 5%. Despite the massive gap, Edge had launched multiple AI features months ago, while Chrome is just starting out.
Security tip: Google Chrome recently settled a $5 Billion lawsuit that proved it tracks you. If you’d like to retain your privacy, skip ads on Youtube and everywhere else by default I suggest you get a good VPN. You can also go with Brave browser
